Unfolding Substance―Creating Subject Matter Workshop with Anita Schmaltz: Mahany/Meininger Community Center, Room #2, 3500 Marais, Royal Oak, 48073, Tuesday nights, October 14, 21, 28, November 4, 11 & 18, 7pm – 9pm. This workshop is designed to provide a set a tools & methods to assist artists of varied disciplines―from visual arts to writing to music―generate ideas for your work by taking an interdisciplinary approach to mining inspiration, by self-study through writing and visual arts exercises, through the study of selected artists/creators―Joseph Beuys, David Bowie, Maguy Marin Ballet Company, etc.― and through the exploration of symbol, metaphor, archetypes and gesture. Participants should bring a notebook/sketchbook (preferably without lines) dedicated to the ideas generated in class.
Anita Schmaltz is a Metro Detroit visual artist and writer, with an emphasis on experimental poetry and fiction. She has written reviews and articles on performing arts for the Metro Times Weekly, she teaches creative writing in Detroit public schools through the InsideOut Literary Arts Project, and performs in her music project TeleVision Faerie Tale [TVFT]. www.anitaschmaltz.com
