The Many Benefits of Poetry in Motion Yoga

by Mary Sitto
Springfed Arts-Metro Detroit Writers added a new workshop this winter to the creative writing workshops. Poetry in Motion Yoga with Lisa Galperin combines yoga and poetry in a class that is both relaxing and energizing.

There are numerous physical, mental and spiritual benefits in a regular yoga practice. Yoga creates a union of body, mind and spirit. It produces a flexible, strong and toned body. Yoga has anti-aging properties and healing effects on a variety of health conditions. For those of us who are writers, it teaches how to quiet the mind so that we can focus on our work, and it reduces stress, which provides an increase in creativity.

Yoga poses can look intimidating, however it is more about the breathing and paying attention to your body, not how far you can stretch and touch your toes. Lisa works with the students in her class and encourages them at their own individual level. She helps with the poses so they are done correctly, without strain. Lisa is easy to follow, even for the beginner, she thoroughly explains and demonstrates all the postures. The class is wrapped up with a reading of poetry, leaving the students inspired as well as invigorated.
