This workshop is for all levels of writers, especially the curious kind. Through reading and discussing poetry from the U.S. and around the world, writing poems, and work-shopping them, participants will explore craft, and the music of language. Writers will be encouraged to journey independently the ‘less traveled’ roads of poetry and the well- worn ones, and share observations with the class.

Dawn McDuffie has an MFA from Vermont College and has taught Creative Writing at the Scarab Club and the Detroit Opera House since 2000. Her poems have appeared in Rattle, Driftwood, Diner, The MacGuffin, and Feminist Studies and the recent anthology, Mona Poetica. Her 2004 essay, “Humor and Poetry” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Dawn’s first chapbook, People in My Head, won first place in the Heartlands Today contest in 1997. Her second chapbook, Carmina Detroit, will be forthcoming in 2006 from Adastra Press. In every session students will have a chance to read examples of some of the best traditional and contemporary poetry. Of course members will also share their own poems and listen to the work of fellow class members.

Zilka Joseph has taught at the Roeper School, was Writer in Residence with the InsideOut Literary Arts Project, and currently tutors at Oakland Community College.
She is published in her native India and in The Driftwood Review, Rattle, Paterson Literary Review, the Connecticut River Review, The Iconoclast, The MacGuffin and others. She won a Cranbrook Writers’ Guild Award for poetry in 2005, and recently was awarded an Honorable Mention and an Editor’s Choice award for the 2006 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Contest. Her first chapbook will be published by Mayapple Press later this year.
