What a great line up we have for you! Poetry @ the Opera House presented by Comerica Bank, Springfed Arts-Metro Detroit Writers, The Michigan Opera Theater, and Poets & Writers Inc will be offered every Monday evening from July 10 through August 9, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on stage in street level Cafe of The Michigan Opera Theater on Madison at Broadway. (across from Comerica Park) Some free street parking and ample parking should be available onsite at in The Opera House Parking area off Madison,

July 17=John Rybicki (MI Poet), Sophia Rivkin (MI), Charles Fleetham (MI) &  Asya Raines with special guest poet Rayfield Waller.

John Rybicki’s work with school children in Detroit has been written about in Time. His poetry collection is Traveling at High Speeds from New Issues Press. Sophia Rivkin has been published in many literary reviews and was recently awarded the Copps competition from Olivet College. Asya Raines, a native Latvian, co-authored Asya’s Laws: Lessons in Love Lost and Found, a memoir about the truths of the heart and the actions it inspires.

July 24=Edward Morin (Opera Poet) & Open Mic-All Invited.

Edward Morin is author of several poetry collections including The Dust of Our City. With Fang Dai and Dennis Ding, he co-translated The Red Azalea: Chinese Poetry since the Cultural Revolution. He teaches English at the College for Creative Studies and writes for the Detroit News. He’s been published in journals such as Ploughshares and the Beloit Poetry Journal.

July 31=An Evening of Michigan Poets: Gladys Cardiff, Mary Ann Wehler, Margo LaGattuta & Cheri L. Roberts.

Gladys Cardiff, an Oakland University professor, is a member of the Native Writer’s Circle of the Americas and her poems have appeared in periodicals and anthologies for some twenty years. Among Mary Ann Wehler’s many awards are the Third Coast Writers’ Conference Poetry Prize in 2000 and Touchstone’s MFA Poetry Award in 2001. Well-published in literary journals, her most recent collection is titled Throat: Poems. Margo LaGattuta has published four collections of poetry, her poetry and essays have appeared in national literary magazines and anthologies, and she recently received a Michigan Creative Artist’s Grant from ArtServe Michigan. She teaches at Oakland Community College and University of MI. Cheri L. Roberts is a published poet and creative writing teacher, Boysville Volunteer Facilitator and Outreach Director for MDW.

August 7=Phillip Sterling (MI), M.L. Liebler & The Magic Poetry Band featuring Faruq Z. Bey, Ron English, Jef Reynoldz, Bill Hulet, Professor Louie & Miss Marie PLUS Detroit Poets Perri Giovannucci and Anita Schmaltz.

Phillip Sterling won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry, a PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, and two Senior Fulbright lectureships (Belgium and Poland). Quatrains (Pudding House Publications 2006) is his most recent publication.
