MDW Downtown Series Celebrates
International Women’s Month
The Scarab Club will be presenting SA-MDW’s Annual International Women’s Month Reading on Sunday, March 30, 2 p.m.

The works of inspired, innovative and local Detroit female writers Suzanne Scarfone, Kawita Kandpal, Cindy Frenkel & Caroline Maun will be presented. The four wonderful poets will take us on an international afternoon through their words and images. Please save the date and attend.

Suzanne Scarfone poems have appeared in Phoebe: A Journal of Feminist Scholarship, Cider Press Review, Earth’s Daughters, Natural Bridge: A Journal of Contemporary Literature, Ducts, FRIGG, Switched-on-Gutenberg and Poetry Repairs. She is Education Director and writer-in-residence with InsideOut Literary Arts Project in Detroit and teaching artist with VSA arts.

Kawita Kandpal has her MFA in poetry from Bowling Green State University. Her poems have appeared in many journals such as TriQuarterly and Puerto del Sol. She teaches English at Jackson Community College and conducts InsideOut residencies. Her new book from Detroit’s Marick Press is entitled Folding a River.

Cindy Frenkel’s writing has appeared in numerous publications, ranging from Vanity Fair to The New York Observer, where she was a regular columnist.  She co-authored the book, “100 Essential Books for Jewish Readers” with Rabbi Daniel B. Syme.  Locally, she has written for The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit Institute of Art and The Jewish News, among others.  She received her M.F. A. from Columbia’s creating writing program in 1985, while working on the editorial staff of The New Yorker.

Caroline Maun is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her interests include modern poetry, women’s writing, and writing pedagogy. She is the editor of The Collected Poems of Evelyn Scott, author of a collection of poetry titled The Sleeping, and co-editor of Virtual Identities: The Construction of Selves in Cyberspace.
The 2008 Downtown Series is presented by Springfed Arts-Metro Detroit Writers, Poets & Writers, Inc & The Scarab Club. All readings are on Sunday afternoons from 2 pm-4 pm at The Scarab Club located directly behind The Detroit Institute of Art at 217 E. Farnsworth at John R. All readings are free and parking is free!
